Se resumen las polémicas</em><br /><em>de la época entre romanticismo, positivismo y realismo o</em><br /><em>naturalismo, como corrientes literarias y de pensamiento,</em><br /><em>y se analizan las posiciones de esta novelista y ensayista,</em><br /><em>quien aprobaba del positivismo científico de Comte, pero</em><br /><em>deploraba sus ideas retrógradas sobre la mujer. Se exploran</em><br /><em>los aciertos y las limitaciones de su novela social,</em><br /><em>Blanca Sol, así como el rechazo que produjeron las ideas</em><br /><em>progresistas de su autora. Finalmente, se narran las vicisitudes</em><br /><em>de su ocaso.</em></p><p><em><strong>Palabras clave:</strong> Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera,</em><br /><em>novela peruana, mujeres, positivismo, naturalismo</em><br /><em><strong></strong></em></p><p><em><strong>Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera and Her Times: A</strong></em><br /><em><strong>Woman Writing against the Trend</strong></em><br /><em><strong></strong></em></p><p><em><strong>Abstract:</strong> This paper examines aspects of the life and</em><br /><em>works of a great Peruvian writer of the end of the XIXth</em><br /><em>century, Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera, in the social</em><br /><em>and ideological context in which she lived and wrote. The</em><br /><em>controversies of her time among romanticism, positivism</em><br /><em>and realism or naturalism are summarized as literary</em><br /><em>movements, and her positions about them are analyzed.</em><br /><em>She approved of Comte’s scientific positivism, but deplored</em><br /><em>his retrograde ideas about women. The qualities and</em><br /><em>shortcomings of her social novel, Blanca Sol are explored,</em><br /><em>as well as the rejection it provoked due to her progressive</em><br /><em>ideas.
